Furniture & Mattress Care Information

Upholstery Care Instructions

With proper care your upholstered pieces will provide years of beautiful service. Always allow several inches between your furniture and any heat source. Avoid placing items in direct sunlight. Dust frequently using the soft brush attachment on your vacuum. Rotate and turn seat cushions often to avoid excessive wear.

Fabric Cleaning Codes

Fabrics are woven in varying textures and materials. Pilling and fading are not covered by manufacturer's warranties. Fabric protection treatment is recommended to extend the life and appearance of fabrics. There are four codes (W, S, W-S, X) used by manufacturers to indicate recommended cleaning methods. These cleaning codes are as follows:

Code "W"
To prevent overall soiling, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean using the foam only from a water-based cleaning agent such as a mild detergent or non-solvent upholstery shampoo. Always pretest a small area first before proceeding. Apply foam with a soft brush in a circular motion. Vacuum when dry. Use a professional furniture cleaning service if an overall soiled condition has been reached.

Code "S"
To prevent overall soiling, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean using a mild water-free solvent or dry cleaning product. Clean only in a well-ventilated room and avoid any product containing Carbon Tetrachloride which is highly toxic. Pretest a small area first before proceeding. Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.

Code "W-S"
To prevent overall soiling, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean with a mild solvent, an upholstery shampoo or the foam from a mild detergent. Apply detergent foam with a soft brush in a circular motion. Vacuum when dry. When using a solvent or dry cleaning product, follow instructions carefully and clean only in a well-ventilated room. Avoid any product that is highly toxic. With either method, always pretest a small area before proceeding. Use a professional furniture cleaning service if an overall soiled condition has been reached.

Code "X"
Clean this fabric only by vacuuming or light brushing to prevent accumulation of any dust and grime. Water-based or solvent-based cleaning agents of any kind may cause excessive shrinking, staining or distortion of the surface pile and should not be used. Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.

Leather Furniture Care

Leather will normally outlast fabric at least three to one. It is durable but not accident or injury proof. Leather protection treatments are highly recommended. Never use soaps, saddle soaps, oil, all-purpose cleaners or solvents on your leather furnishings. Keep your furniture away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep the pores of your leather free from dust particles by cleaning regularly with the soft brush attachment on your vacuum.

Wood Furniture Care Tips

For items that have a clear-coated finish use a quality furniture polish such as Guardsman Furniture Polish (or a similar product) which contains no waxes, silicones or petroleum distillates. With woods like oak, that are often oil finished, we recommend Howard's Feed n' Wax (or a similar product) to protect the finish. Wood pieces should be dusted frequently and polished with a soft cloth about every month. All spills should be cleaned up at once using a blotting rather than wiping motion. Avoid extremes in humidity and temperature. Since solid woods expand and contract with moisture content, table leaves may not fit perfectly at all times because of this. Rotate accessories to different areas and lift instead of dragging objects when moving them. Plastic or rubber objects can mar finishes; use felt or cloth for pads to protect surfaces from hot dishes, beverages, candles, flower pots and vases.

Mattresses Rotating & Care

The following care tips were written for conventional innerspring mattresses, however many of these tips still apply to more modern latex and memory foam mattress sets too. Rotate your mattress over and end-to-end every 2 weeks for 2 months after purchase, and every 3 months thereafter. Body impressions are not a mattress defect. Never bend your mattress or the corners when applying fitted sheets, as this may damage the innerspring unit of your mattress. Do not stand or jump on your mattress or foundation. Keep your bedding clean and dry. Never "carry" your mattress by the handles (if any). Only use the handles to position the mattress once it is on the foundation. When purchasing a new mattress, be sure to purchase the matching foundation/box spring, which works with the mattress to provide the right suspension. Failure to use a proper foundation could result in abuse of the mattress and may lead to damage and unsatisfactory performance. All Queen and King sized mattresses require a center support. Products that are abused, damaged or soiled are not covered by any manufacturer's warranty. We recommend using a mattress pad that will prevent staining or applying a fabric protection such as Guardian to your new mattress set.

Furniture Warranty Coverage Programs

Most furniture warranty protection programs offered by furniture retailers are exceptionally good investments. Ask your furniture dealer what protection programs they offer for your new furniture purchases and what the programs cover. Quality furniture is a long-term investment and is well worth the small cost of protecting it. More Information
