Computer Desk Shopping

Filed under: Office — Tags: , , — The FQ Team @ Sunday

Shopping for Computer Desks Made Simple

In today’s day and age, many of use can agree that living without using a computer would be almost impossible. Since the inception of the internet and the World Wide Web, the world has changed the way it socializes, finds the news, develop ideas, and work. Things would definitely be different if its technology hasn’t advanced as it did over the last decade or so.

With usage of the internet and computers at its highest its ever been, a reciprocal need for proper furniture for the home and office has followed. So much so that finding a simple computer desk has become a tedious task for many. However, this guide is here to help make the endeavor of finding a computer desk a simple task by identifying several styles of computer desks, as well as different options to consider during your search.

First thing to look at even before you start your hunt for the right computer desk is to take measurements of the area or room that the desk will inhabit. With this information on hand, it’ll definitely go a long way towards helping you find a desk that is right for you. It’ll also help narrow your search because you’ll know right off the bat whether or not a desk will be able to fit in your space.

Other helpful hints to consider before you start your expedition would be to make notes of the locations of power sources in your room. Also take into consideration who will be primarily using the computer, for example, are they left or right handed? Finally, consider if more than just a desk is need. Will you need a hutch, sideboard, credenza, bookcases, filing cabinets, or chairs? Make measurements and take these considerations into account before you head out the door and you should be ready to find the desk that will be right for you.

So what are the different types of computer desks that are available to you? Generally speaking, there are four typical styles you will come across.

Standard Desks:

  • As the name suggests, standard desks are basic in design. Most will have slide-out keyboard shelves as well as additional opportunities to include separate options such as the ones mentioned above. Furthermore, most standard desks will be approximately 29 to 31 inches in height.

Executive Desks:

  • Executive desks are similar to standard desks, however are usually much more elaborate in its design. For example, many executive desks tend to use intricate accents or motifs. You can usually differentiate executive desks to standard desks from the wider desk top that they incorporate, as well as the richer and fuller finishes they tend to come in. Some may also come with drawers or panel doors as well. However, like standard desks, they too are usually 29 to 31 inches in height.

L-Shaped Desks:

  • L-shaped desks are composed of two separate parts to create one piece in the shape of an L. These desks are great for saving space, while maximizing work space. The reason being, L-shaped desks fits into tight corners, leaving more floor space. But because there are two components, you still have large surface area to work with. Furthermore, they add convenience due to the fact that everything tends to be within arm’s length reach.

U-Shaped Desks:

  • Finally, you can also consider picking up a U-Shaped desk. These tend to take up the most space, but are suitable for someone who tends to need a lot of extra work space. They are usually composed of a credenza, as well as two desks flanked on each side.

If you need mobility out of your desk, a computer cart may be the best option. They are smaller desks usually very small in width; however, they make good use of casters to be able to move the cart from one area to the next. They may not make the best workstation, but are very convenient when necessary.

If you’ve read enough and want to begin your search for a computer desk, my recommendation would be to visit OfficeFurnitureNMore.com. This site has hundreds of desks to choose from, as well as other office furnishing solutions, such as file cabinets, hutches, bookcases, office chairs and much more. This site is also part of the Cymax Stores family, who were voted in as an Internet Top 500 Retailer.

If online purchasing is not right for you, a trip to your favorite furniture retailer should suffice. Most won’t have the type of selection that OfficeFurnitureNMore.com has, however you get the opportunity to see fully assembled versions of the desk you may want to purchase before you make a commitment.

Haworth’s New & Enhanced Product Introductions

Filed under: Office — The FQ Team @ Sunday

We found the following press release about Haworth Furniture and thought other die-hard Haworth fans would find it of interest. If you’re in the San Francisco area, make sure to check out Haworth’s new showroom. You can also find Haworth furniture dealers world wide at globallocator.haworth.com

———————————————————————————————–

HOLLAND, MI – June 15, 2009 – Today, Haworth introduced four new products and numerous product enhancements at NeoCon 2009, winning three silvers and a gold for Best of NeoCon. The new products are: LIM, a LED light; TecCrete, redesigned raised access flooring; Planes height adjustable tables; and Compose enhancements, systems with desking and benching applications.

LIM – LIM (Light In Motion) is a multi-purpose, multi-task LED light with elemental structure and multiple reconfigurations. It meets multiple lighting needs for many applications, including office, institutional, hospitality and residential. LIM has a refined elegant design – a simple aluminum extrusion profile that can be easily machined. The light’s magnetic and pivot platform enable 180 degrees rotation as well as easy adjustment. The small bases and attachment methods enable greater workspace flexibility in application, placement, intensity levels and attachment methods. LIM is the market’s most flexible and comprehensive LED lighting solution and won a silver for Best of NeoCon 2009, Lighting – Task/Desktop Furniture-Integrated.

TecCrete – With refined design, universal applicability, a proprietary concrete and steel composite structure and 58% recycled content, TecCrete builds on 25 years as the access floor that doesn’t feel or look like one. The new, refined exposed concrete surface offers a unique aesthetic that is beautiful enough to leave bare. TecCrete can also be covered with modular carpet, laminate, vinyl, rubber or almost anything. This product creates unique visual opportunities, including use in planter boxes, reflecting pools or stained to form floor patterns. Bare or covered, TecCrete can now be used throughout the entire facility, providing a single access floor platform for work and learning environments, as well as computer and utility environments. It has been redesigned to meet the varying loading and finish requirements. TecCrete received a silver Best of NeoCon 2009 for the Raised Flooring category.

Planes height adjustable tables – Planes height adjustable tables offer clean design, best-in-class ergonomics and an array of color choices on the broadest selection of adjustment mechanisms. The shared aesthetic meets user and application needs and, although specifically designed to coordinate with Haworth’s recent developments in architectural interiors, the clean, modern design blends well with all product settings and spaces. The tables include the option of six mechanisms, including incremental, crank, torsion and three ranges of electric. There are sit-sit and sit-to-stand height ranges, from 22”-35” incremental to 22”-48” dual-stage electric. Designed specifically for the most current ergonomic standards, these mechanisms meet ANSI/HFES 100-2007 for height range and knee-space clearance. More importantly, Planes height adjustable tables are designed for specific needs such as low back pain. This product was awarded a Gold in the Height-Adjustable Worksurfaces category for Best of NeoCon 2009.

Compose enhancements – The new Compose desking product, with a specific focus on benching, includes a 29” high panel, power routing and access below the work surface, a frameless glass topper, wood trim components and knife edge work surfaces. The additional panel height allows Compose to be arranged in a variety of applications and provides power and data routing below the work surface and at base locations. The top trim of the panel lines up with the tops of work surfaces providing a simple, clean aesthetic. In addition, this application introduces new 3-way tile spanning kit to eliminate reveal lines typically present at a 3-way junction. For Best of NeoCon 2009, Compose received a silver in the Desking-Benching Enhancements for Furniture Systems.

Haworth also introduced several product enhancements, including:

• Laminate casegoods
• Moveable wall enhancements
• X series storage
• Wood casegoods
• 3 and 4 circuit power delivery
• Nature sustainable leather for seating
• Laser cut systems steel tiles
• Zody task chair headrest

Baker’s Racks Aren’t Just for Eating Areas

Filed under: Bedroom, Children's, Dining Room, Living Room, Office — Tags: , , , — The FQ Team @ Saturday

Baker’s racks are not just for the kitchen and dining area. Today, baker’s racks are available in many styles and finishes and can be used in any room for organizing and displaying items.

Examples of uses for baker racks

  • Use in your living room as shelving for accessories, pottery, photos, collectibles, treasures you have found while traveling, plants, etc. The uses for a bakers rack in your living room are only limited by your imagination.
  • Baker’s racks in eating areas such as your kitchen or dining room are the most common use – although they can be used in many different ways. Use a bakers rack in your dining areas to keep cookbooks, display beautiful dishes, store wine and glasses, or just decorate with accessories to add charm to your kitchen or dining room.
  • Bedrooms can use baker’s racks for displaying things such as dolls and stuffed animal collections.
  • The home office is a great candidate for a bakers rack. Use a baker’s rack in your home office to keep extra printing paper and office supplies, organize books and manuals, keep extra file organizers, computer accessories, etc.
  • Kid’s rooms can always use a baker’s rack for displaying and organizing items such as toys, models, stuffed animals and more.
  • Laundry rooms are great places to use a baker’s rack. Use a baker’s rack in your laundry room for organizing detergents, fabric softeners; even add a few synthetic or real plants to give the room some little extra charm.
  • The end of a hallway is also a great place for a bakers rack. Place a baker’s rack at the end of a hall to keep books, decorate with accessories, or display treasured items you’ve collected over the years.

Yes, the bakers rack can be used for so many purposes if only given the chance. You can find bakers racks in a wide variety of materials and finishes from wood to metal. Baker’s racks can also be found in styles such as contemporary, modern, country, traditional, mission, shaker and more.

If you could use a little more organization and flair in a room of your home, a baker’s rack just might be the answer.

Have more ideas on how a baker’s rack can be used for function and decorating? If so, please comment on this post and share your ideas!
