Shopping for Computer Desks Made Simple

In today’s day and age, many of use can agree that living without using a computer would be almost impossible. Since the inception of the internet and the World Wide Web, the world has changed the way it socializes, finds the news, develop ideas, and work. Things would definitely be different if its technology hasn’t advanced as it did over the last decade or so.

With usage of the internet and computers at its highest its ever been, a reciprocal need for proper furniture for the home and office has followed. So much so that finding a simple computer desk has become a tedious task for many. However, this guide is here to help make the endeavor of finding a computer desk a simple task by identifying several styles of computer desks, as well as different options to consider during your search.

First thing to look at even before you start your hunt for the right computer desk is to take measurements of the area or room that the desk will inhabit. With this information on hand, it’ll definitely go a long way towards helping you find a desk that is right for you. It’ll also help narrow your search because you’ll know right off the bat whether or not a desk will be able to fit in your space.

Other helpful hints to consider before you start your expedition would be to make notes of the locations of power sources in your room. Also take into consideration who will be primarily using the computer, for example, are they left or right handed? Finally, consider if more than just a desk is need. Will you need a hutch, sideboard, credenza, bookcases, filing cabinets, or chairs? Make measurements and take these considerations into account before you head out the door and you should be ready to find the desk that will be right for you.

So what are the different types of computer desks that are available to you? Generally speaking, there are four typical styles you will come across.

Standard Desks:

  • As the name suggests, standard desks are basic in design. Most will have slide-out keyboard shelves as well as additional opportunities to include separate options such as the ones mentioned above. Furthermore, most standard desks will be approximately 29 to 31 inches in height.

Executive Desks:

  • Executive desks are similar to standard desks, however are usually much more elaborate in its design. For example, many executive desks tend to use intricate accents or motifs. You can usually differentiate executive desks to standard desks from the wider desk top that they incorporate, as well as the richer and fuller finishes they tend to come in. Some may also come with drawers or panel doors as well. However, like standard desks, they too are usually 29 to 31 inches in height.

L-Shaped Desks:

  • L-shaped desks are composed of two separate parts to create one piece in the shape of an L. These desks are great for saving space, while maximizing work space. The reason being, L-shaped desks fits into tight corners, leaving more floor space. But because there are two components, you still have large surface area to work with. Furthermore, they add convenience due to the fact that everything tends to be within arm’s length reach.

U-Shaped Desks:

  • Finally, you can also consider picking up a U-Shaped desk. These tend to take up the most space, but are suitable for someone who tends to need a lot of extra work space. They are usually composed of a credenza, as well as two desks flanked on each side.

If you need mobility out of your desk, a computer cart may be the best option. They are smaller desks usually very small in width; however, they make good use of casters to be able to move the cart from one area to the next. They may not make the best workstation, but are very convenient when necessary.

If you’ve read enough and want to begin your search for a computer desk, my recommendation would be to visit OfficeFurnitureNMore.com. This site has hundreds of desks to choose from, as well as other office furnishing solutions, such as file cabinets, hutches, bookcases, office chairs and much more. This site is also part of the Cymax Stores family, who were voted in as an Internet Top 500 Retailer.

If online purchasing is not right for you, a trip to your favorite furniture retailer should suffice. Most won’t have the type of selection that OfficeFurnitureNMore.com has, however you get the opportunity to see fully assembled versions of the desk you may want to purchase before you make a commitment.

Shopping for Furniture with Search Engines

Although this post is titled “Shopping for Furniture with Search Engines”, these shopping sites can improve your online shopping for any product.

So, without further ado, here’s the key shopping features of the major search engines.

Google Product Search

Google Product Search can be accessed from the “Shopping” link at the top of Google’s home page. The following example is for a search request for a “modern red leather sofa”, which Google instantly produces over 2,900 products to choose from. Furthermore, you can sort these products by relevance, price, product rating, and seller rating as shown below.

In addition to the above features, Google Product Search allows you to sort by specific price ranges, search by product category, brand, stores, and seller ratings by stars. This can be found at the bottom of any product search result page as follows.

Yahoo! Shopping

Yahoo! Shopping can be accessed through the “Shopping” link under the Yahoo! logo on their home page. Although Yahoo! Shopping isn’t as feature rich as Google Shopping, it allows you to sort search results by price, department, and store. In the image below for a search for “modern red leather sofa”, Yahoo! Shopping only produced a little over 200 results in comparison to Google’s Product Search results of 2,900 plus. It should also be noted that Yahoo! charges stores to be included in their shopping results, whereas Google does not charge for inclusion in its search results or accept payment for better placement.

Bing Shopping

Bing Shopping can be accessed through the “Shopping” link on the left side of Bing’s home page. Although Bing is innovating the world of search, their product searches produce significantly less results than Google or Yahoo! For example, for the same product search of “modern red leather sofa”, Bing produced 98 search results, which is less than half of what Yahoo! produced for the same search phrase and 2,800 less than Google. Bing Shopping allows you to sort shopping results by category, brand, price, best match and “cashback only” as shown in the image below.
